A tale from the Brothers Grimm
Once upon a time there was a very sad girl. Her name was Rapunzel. She was a prisoner in a high tower.
A mean witch had put bricks over the door. Rapunzel could not leave the tower. Also, she could not cut her hair.
Every evening, the witch called out, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Let down your hair!”
Rapunzel let down her hair. Rapunzel had very long hair. It was beautiful, golden hair.
The witch went up the tower to check the girl’s hair. The witch inspected the girl’s hair. She made sure the girl never cut her hair! She left the girl some bread and soup. Finally, the witch left the tower.
But the girl could not leave. She looked out the window sadly.
As the witch was leaving, a handsome prince arrived. He saw the tower and the witch. “What is that?” he wondered. The prince came closer and saw the witch going down a beautiful girl’s hair. The prince was curious.
The prince went to the tower. He waited for the witch to leave. The prince had heard the witch. So he too called out, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Let down your hair!”
The handsome prince went up the girl’s golden hair. Finally, he went inside the tower.
The girl was so surprised. “Who are you?” she said. “I am a prince. Who are you?” he said.
Rapunzel said, “My name is Rapunzel. I am a prisoner in this tower. I can’t leave the tower. Please help me.’
The prince helped Rapunzel to leave. He took the bricks off the door. “Thank you!” said Rapunzel. She was so happy to be free.
At that moment, the witch arrived. “Who are you?!” she cried. The terrible witch held on to the girl’s hair. She would not let her leave. Poor Rapunzel cried “Help!” and the prince ran to her. Quickly, the prince took out a knife. He cut the girl’s hair. At that moment, the witch cried out, “No! My power! I’m losing my power.” And the terrible witch fell to the ground.
Quickly, the prince and Rapunzel went to the prince’s castle. They fell in love. Soon, Rapunzel married the prince. They lived happily ever after.
