The Little Matchstick Girl
A French tale
Once upon a time there was a poor girl. She did not have parents. She did not have a house or a family. She was poor.
One day it was December and the temperature was -10 degrees. It was December 25th -Christmas. Families had celebrations.
The families saw the little girl … but they passed by.
To survive, the little girl sold matches. “Matches! Matches!” cried the girl.
But people just passed by. They had no time and no pity. They did not want matches.
The hours passed. The temperature was -20 degrees!
The girl was desperate. She was very, very cold.
She lit a match. The girl closed her eyes. She imagined she was in a house. The house was beautiful.
Quickly, the girl took another match. It was the final match. The girl lit the match. In her imagination, the girl kissed her grandmother. She was not in a house. She was in a carriage.
The carriage flew them to paradise. The girl and her grandmother were in paradise.
And the girl was dead.
