An opera by Lully
Once there was a man named Roland. He was rich. He was from a royal family. His uncle was King Charlemagne. Many girls wanted to marry Roland. But Roland was in love with Princess Angelique.
Angelique was beautiful. Roland was so in love with Angelique… He visited Angelique day after day. He professed his love.
Angelique’s father was happy. Roland was rich and he was royalty. “Angelique, marry Roland,” said the king. But Angelique was sad. She did not love Roland.
Angelique was in love with Medor…but it was a secret.
Medor was very handsome. His family was from Africa. Medor was not royalty, but he was courageous and good. Medor and Angelique loved each other. It was true love.
Day after day, Roland visited Angelique. He said, “I love you.” Angelique was respectful to Roland. She said hello to Roland… but otherwise she stayed silent.
One day, Angelique was walking through the forest. She was secretly going to see Medor. Suddenly, Roland appeared.
Roland said, “Angelique, I love you. Marry me!” He gave Angelique a beautiful bracelet. It had rubies and emeralds. Angelique said “Thank you” respectfully. Her family would be happy. Her father wanted her to marry Roland. But she was not happy. She did not want to marry Roland. She ran into the forest.
Her father would force her to marry Roland. so Angelique did not return home to her father. She ran away.
She ran and ran until her legs hurt. She ran to Medor’s cabin in the forest. Angelique kissed Medor. At first Medor was happy, but then he saw Angelique was sad. “Why are you sad?” he said.
“Roland wants to marry me. My father will force me to marry Roland,” said Angelique sadly.
“Don’t marry him, my love,” said Medor. “Marry me, Angelique.”
Angelique was happy for a second. Then she said, “I am not free to marry you.” She cried bitterly.
“Marry me,” said Medor again. “Let’s run away.”
Angelique was desperate. “Yes,” she said. She and Medor kissed. Hand in hand, they ran away. They were free!
Medor and Angelique ran to a small town. Angelique took off her royal clothes. She put on a wedding dress. She was so beautiful, and the couple was so happy the people of the town were happy. They celebrated at the chapel. There was music and a joyful celebration.
At the castle, Roland was nervous. “Where was Angelique?” he asked the servants and the royal family. She had disappeared. Immediately, Roland ran to the forest to find her. He walked and walked, crying out “Angelique, my love.” He looked and looked, until it was very dark.
He stopped at a local town. He asked, “Have you seen a beautiful princess?” The happy villagers said, “No, no princess. But there was a beautiful bride. She was as beautiful as a princess. She was generous, too.”
Roland was suspicious. He asked, “She was beautiful and generous? How was she generous?”
The town’s person said, “She paid for food and music. She invited the town to a big celebration. She paid generously with this beautiful bracelet. See? These rubies are real.”
Roland saw the bracelet. It was the same bracelet he gave Angelique. Roland was devastated. He left. He returned to the castle, but he never loved again.
